Math Assessments and Tutoring
Math is an essential component of success, much like reading. Our program focuses on the ten (10) key areas of math, as identified by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). According to the NCTM, "We live in a time of extraordinary and accelerating change. New knowledge, tools, and ways of doing and communicating mathematics continue to emerge and evolve. The need to understand and be able to use mathematics in everyday life and in the workplace has never been greater and will continue to increase. In this changing world, those who understand and can do mathematics will have significantly enhanced opportunities and options for shaping their futures. Mathematical competence opens doors to productive futures. A lack of mathematical competence keeps those doors closed. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) challenges the notion that mathematics is for only the select few. On the contrary, everyone needs to understand mathematics. All students should have the opportunity and the support necessary to learn significant mathematics with depth and understanding. There is no conflict between equity and excellence." - Executive Summary, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics
The 10 key areas of Math we assess and focus on are:
Basic Concepts
1. Numeration2. Algebra
3. Geometry
4. Measurement
5. Data Analysis & Probability
Operations
6. Mental Computation and Estimation7. Addition and Subtraction
8. Multiplication and Division
Applications
9. Foundations of Problem Solving10. Applied Problem Solving
The KeyMath–3 Diagnostic Assessment (KeyMath–3 DA) is a comprehensive, individually administered measure of essential mathematical concepts and skills. It includes 10 subtests that represent three general areas: Basic Concepts (conceptual knowledge), Operations (computational skills), and Applications (problem solving). KeyMath–3 DA content covers the full spectrum of math concepts and skills from early experiences with rote and rational counting through factoring polynomials and solving linear equations and can be used with individuals aged 4½ through 21 years who are functioning at these instructional levels.
Reading NOW's assessment provides several types of derived scores that are useful for interpreting performance and for communicating eesults to parents and practitioners. Scale scores (mean = 10; SD = 3), confidence intervals, grade and age equivalents, and descriptive categories are used to describe subtest performance. Standard scores (mean = 100; SD = 15), confidence intervals, grade and age equivalents, percentile ranks, and descriptive categories are used to describe area and Total Test performance.
Math Tutoring
Our tutoring program focuses on SPECIFICALLY what your student needs help with. Our Assessment process identifies those key strengths and needs your child has, and we customize a program to improve their skills and build confidence.
