Fun and Hands-on Activities for Building Reading Comprehension
Workshop Description: Are you bored with the same type of comprehension activities? Do you want some new hands-on ideas to promote comprehension skills for your students? This workshop session will feature fun and different activities you can use at literacy centers or as after reading activities to promote comprehension skills for students. Sample activities and modeling of the use of each activity will be provided along with opportunities for participants to make and take their own activities. Bring your favorite children’s literature, chapter books, novels, or core reading program anthology to create sample activities during the workshop session.
Reading Fluency: A Key to Reading Comprehension
Workshop Description: What is a fluent reader? This workshop session will feature research on the characteristics of a fluent reader and the modeling and sharing of simple effective activities and strategies to enhance a reader’s fluency rate, expression and intonation. Learn how to use fluency phrase cards, promote automaticity in sight words, and use poetry, repeated readings and readers theater to foster students’ reading fluency.
Using Reading Assessment Data to Enhance Your Instructional Decision Making to Meet Each Student's Reading Needs
Workshop Description: In this session, participants will learn about a variety of quick reading assessment tools and screenings that can be used to gather important data about a child’s strengths and needs as a reader in the area of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Learn how to analyze a variety of types of data in order to plan effective lessons to assist your struggling readers. Research shows when we as educators figure out why a student is struggling and provide a targeted intervention, students can make a tremendous about of progress in the area of reading and become more confident. Sample screening tools will be provided along with the opportunity to purchase the book What’s After Assessment? By Kathleen Strickland as an invaluable educational resource to assist in making instructional decisions.
Developing the Levels of Phonemic Awareness
Workshop Description: Are your students ready for blending and segmenting sounds to decode words? Often young children are not ready due to not mastering the previous levels of phonemics awareness of rhyming, identifying initial and final consonant sounds and distinguishing a digraph sound from a vowel sound. This workshop session will focus on the latest research on the importance of phonemic awareness, using a variety of screening instruments to determine a child’s true phonemic awareness levels, and fun and easy activities to use in the classroom to promote each level of phonemic awareness.
Using Word Building to Enhance Phonics Skills
Workshop Description: Students learn to spell and decode when they see relationships between and among words. This workshop will emphasize the research of Donald Bear on how students learn letter sound relationships and use that knowledge to deceiver new words. Engage in hands-on phonics activities using a variety of manipulatives to build words and sort words based on phonological patterns.
